I am sure yours is not a Slingerland but may be a Regal. All of the Chicago companies made banjos at several prices including the top of the line banjos.

Your banjo is not a piece of crap, it is just not a professional level banjo of the era. in Boston in the 1960s, this is a serious and heavy-duty banjo with a Vega Little Wonder Rim Construction and Martins Esteemed Construction Values. Not to be confused with the light-weight FolkLore Model made by the Vega Co. I have a no-name banjo with the same headstock that I suspect is a Chicago made banjo (home of Regal, Lyon and Healy, Slingerland, and a host of others) and not made in Boston. It is likely that the banjo was made by one of the many companies that were exant in the ’30s. can anyone give me some idea of origin and valu these. Apparently the 'Student' model to Lyon and Healy wasnt the typical 2.00 violin in 1910. When I was in the store, they had a selection of Martin guitars that were made only for them. I picked this up on an online auction and except for a hundred years of battle scars, it is a really nice instrument. See Majestic Guitars for more information on this. The were granted a patent on designs for a Tone Chamber in the early 1920's (June 2nd 1920).

Lyon & Healy routinely used talon or patent 1897 tailpieces (see fourth row of pictures below) on many of their unmarked banjos, and their better-grade offerings frequently had notched, rather than grooved stretcher bands even in the early 1890’s. The Ditson Philly plant closed in the 20’s and since it is not mentioned on the label, I would put this one late 20’s or early 30’s time period. If anyone else knows better, correct me please. They apparently had drums made for them by Lyon and Healy and I know that Lyon and Healy made mandolins during the same time period so my best guess would be that this is a Lyon and Healy made instrument. As for history, there is no makers mark on it but it says “Made expressly for Oliver Ditson Company,Boston, New York” From my research, the Ditson company made their own instruments and also contracted with other companies to build instruments for them. Looks as though it may have been a star and then was filled in and replaced? Did the manufacture do that for Ditson? Or was it done after market? Don’t know. It appears that the head stock inlay has been replaced at some point. I replaced the broken tail piece with a 4 string banjo tail piece and put two strings on each post. He started out working for Lyon & Healy where as a talented multi instrument musician he was persuaded to write a 'play the Mandolin manual' in the 1890s to replace the Italian translations. It tunes just like a mandolin but sounds like a banjo. He was a Musician, Writer of musical instrument manuals, Inventor and Jobber in the fullest sense of the term. What we have here is what I call a “banjolin” you can call it whatever you want but anyway it is a pretty cool little dude.
